New California law prohibits pretexting

A bill authored by State Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) that protects consumers’ phone records from being improperly obtained by others was signed Friday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

SB 202 makes it illegal to obtain a consumers’ phone records by fraud or deceit, including the practice of “pretexting” — posing as someone else. The bill also makes it illegal to buy or sell a person’s phone records without the owner’s written consent.
