As I’ve been doing on and off for quite a long time now, I am once again searching around trying to find a really good motherboard, preferably at a bargain sale price for a state of the art hardware package..  You know, something that has a quad core (or more!!) cpu running at 2.5ghz or faster, the very latest high end graphics card and can run anything that I’ll be able to throw at it for at least the next five years.

Asus M4A78T-E MotherboardThe big difference is that this time I’m not just shopping for something to use for upgrading my outdated main system, there’s an old Dell Optiplex GX240 that looks like it needs a new motherboard.  The first sign of this need was when I rebooted it this morning only to have it take four tries to get it going.  Then, when it finally did start, the ethernet interface was apparently dead because not only could it not access the Internet, I couldn’t even see it from my machine on my LAN.

The one thing I don’t care for about Dell machines is that, as far as I know, they’re built the way plumbing fixtures are made…. so that only their parts can be used to repair them.  If that were different, I’d love to drop this Asus Motherboard & Quad Core CPU combo into it and give it a REAL upgrade.  Of course, while I’m at it I’d like to drop a second one into my main machine.

I built this computer from parts about four years ago and while it was pretty good then, the things that I’m asking it to do, such as process video and 3D animations are just more than it was intended to do and having a new, state of the art mainboard & CPU would frankly do wonders for my productivity to say the least!
