People (well, government officials) are quick to point out when things like the number of people below the poverty line has dropped and they’re quick to celebrate this fact like they were personally responsible. Then the other shoe drops. The number of people that don’t have insurance is going up.. fast.

POVERTY DROPS BUT RANKS OF UNINSURED GROW

The nation’s poverty rate dropped last year, the Census Bureau reported. It was the
first significant decline since President Bush took office. But the number of people
without health insurance increased to 47 million.

I’ll tell you what. People that don’t have insurance may technically be above the poverty line, but that changes the second somebody in the house gets sick or needs medical attention for any reason at all. Depending on what’s wrong, it’s possible to go through ones entire life savings in almost no time at all.
