Yesterday I talked about how faith needs to be acted on in order for it to have any value and this brings up the question of why faith is so important in the first place.
The main reason that faith is important is that without it you will never please God:
Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
More of why can be explained by examining what faith is. Start by backing up a few verses before the previous one:
Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
If you take the time to get out a Strongs Concordance and look up the meanings of the Greek words that this English text was translated from, you’ll see that Faith can basically be defined as the conviction of the truth of something. This conviction is the foundation of things that are anticipated . This conviction is all the proof we need of anything that God has promised us.
Hebrews 11 gives several examples of how people acted convinced of the truth of something, expecting and looking forward to receiving it. They didn’t have any physical proof or indication that something was so. They simply took God’s word for it. He said it, therefore they knew that He would perform it. Without this conviction of the truth of what God says we can’t expect to please Him. Would you be pleased with someone who wouldn’t believe anything you say?
