How many times have you read or heard expressions talking about “the fear of God” in such a way that imply we should be afraid of God, terrified that He’s going to zap us any second for this or that sin?

The thing is, that is NOT what God means when Proverbs 9:10 says “…fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: “. The word fear in that statement would be much better translated “Awe, reverence, respect”.

God does NOT want us to be terrified of Him. In fact, He doesn’t want us to be in fear over anything. Otherwise “fear not” would not occur 63 times in the Bible (KJV). In Psalms 23:4 we’re shown that we should “fear no evil” because God is with us. In Romans 8:31 we’re reminded “If God be for us, who can be against us?”

Remember that fear, worry, dread, terror and all related forms of torment don’t come form God, He gives us love, not fear.

2 Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
