No, it didn’t. (but it made a pretty good headline didn’t it?)

I just read something over on “Kevin Burton’s NEW FeedBlog” called “Analysis of a -a- -e- -ost Spam Campaign - Why -a- -e- -ost Just Exploded” and because it mentioned the url for one of my posts, I just had to comment.

Basically the post in question is an anti–a- -e- -ost view of paid blogging and Google’s reaction to people who sell links without putting rel=”nofollow” on them. This pro / anti argument has been going on for quite a while now. Some people have decided that everybody else needs to run their blogs according to their standards. I say that it is that it’s up to each individual blogger to decide what they write in their blogs.

What prompted me to write this in the first place is the fact that his post mentioned one of mine “WaMu Checking Account Finder“. It was in a list of posts that he said were part of what he called “a recent — spam campaign”.

Now I’m not going to make any pretense about the fact that I write for —, however I will state absolutely that the post in question was NOT part of a -a- -e- -ost campaign. I know what I’ve written for them and that post is not one of them.

As for his opinions about Real Rank and whether it’s going to be an effective solution to Google’s nuking people’s page rank, I think that he would do well to read “Is -a- -e- -ost Losing Its Way The Truth About Real Rank” over on ComTech News. I think that Jack Spirko gives a very good look at Real Rank and whats wrong with it as well as what -a- -e- -ost could / should do to *REALLY* fix the problem.

Sooner or later I think that somebody, hopefully several somebodies, will implement his recommendations and give the web a much more objective view of website rankings.

As for Google and any “punishment” they may be meeting out… My pagerank on this blog has gone from 3 to 2 and then to 0. Yet my traffic hasn’t fallen at all. I am one of a growing number of people who are deciding that pagerank is only useful as an indicator of what Google thinks and is NOT the be-all end-all of SEO and promotion. It’s just one of many factors to consider and not the most important by a long shot. (in fact, I think it’s getting less important every day)

Oh, and just for the record, I happen to LIKE WaMu checking accounts and services. I don’t have one myself but should my banking needs change I’ll seriously consider WaMu checking accounts. (I normally don’t do a post-by-post-say-so, but the links in this post are free, put there because I felt like it.)

It’s certainly an interesting discussion, and i can see the positive and negative of both sides of the debate. While it’s annoying to read blog posts that are obviously there to earn money from the links, it is also up to the blogger themselves to decide what is the right approach for their blog!

It’s definitely up to the individual blogger to decide, just as it’s up to individual readers to decide what they want to read. It’s true that some posts that are there for link revenue can get annoying, I’ve seen plenty of the other kind that can be just as bad. I’ve also seen “revenue generating” posts that have actually been useful and informative as well as very on-topic.
