I know this sounds really familiar. A news story about the U.N. Security council deciding to impose sanctions on Iran because of it’s nuclear program.
The problem is, we’ve seen this thing before. Not only have there been a number of sanctions imposed against Iran without any apparent effect on their intent to build (and presumably threaten to use) nuclear weapons.
But then it gets better. If you hop into the wayback machine (or your favorite non-google search engine) you will find plenty of examples of sanctions on Iraq. That link was the first result when I put “UN Sanctions on Iraq” into ask.com. There are literally pages of results that follow.
What I’m getting at is this: Sanctions are worth maybe as much as the paper they’re written on. Why? because at no time has any such sanctions been enforced by *all* nations. There’s always nations that are more than willing to ignore those sanctions and help the nation in question.
Of course, after enough years of sanctions we finally reach the point where it will be a lot easier to propose taking action to accomplish what the sanctions couldn’t. This is why Iran should look to their west and think long and hard about what they’re doing. They need to consider carefully the possible consequences to their actions.
On the other side of that equation, those who are pushing for sanctions, those who are issuing sanctions and those who prefer military action need to consider what Iran’s doing. They’re working on developing a nuclear weapon. I have absolutely no doubt that they’re not going to stop until they have one and prove to the world that it works.
Anybody remember North Korea? They were in a similar situation not very long ago. Intent on developing nuclear weapons. Then the world was shocked when they set one off. Why do you suppose people were surprised?

Hi,
I swear I always try to avoid policy but people keep writing about it and then it gets me on it again, I talked about that a lot before but then I found out it is really hard to understand policy whatever you try, it is like an ocean and I believe that only few people in this world are controlling everything and that we are only toys in their hands and they play with us as they want or as their needs should be,
anyway, if you are really willing to discuss this then I will try too even if it takes my breath away,
I believe that sanctions are something can easily avoid by the gov. that control their countries, from my experience I think Saddam (the ex Iraqi president) avoided the effects of sanction and he succeeded in that, it was hard at the beginning but then later he figured it out how to and what to do to succeed in this, even if the U.N. froze the Iraqi accounts in whole the world, Saddam starts easily to print his own money which really worth nothing, they were only papers but he made the Iraqi people work the whole month and then they got paid their salary with those pronted money, and then Saddam started even to buy the dollars or euro with those printed money and coulld fix lots of problems related to the economy of Iraq, so in general I think the sanction didn’t effect Saddam more than it affected some Iraqi people, so he won the time and succeeded.
Now about what happened in 1991 and 2003, Saddam didn’t expect that America would invade Iraq and he thought he could run Iraq forever and that the best they (U.S.) could do is to try to assasinate him like they did in 1998 and then they failed, but this ain’t true,
Anyway, before I talk about why Saddam didn’t believe that America would invade Iraq, I want you to read an article (which the transcribtion of the meeting between Saddam and April glaspie who was the ex American Ambassador in 1990)
http://www.rense.com/general46/gil.htm
well, you can find this transciption on many sites.
read it and let me know what you think,
Also there will be a meeting with FBI agent who questioned Saddam on CBS channel,
I think it is on Sunday 7:00 ET (60 munites),
Thank you,
Regards.
