Given the track record of federal agencies going out of their way to gain power they shouldn’t have, this news isn’t exactly a surprise. The Feds have finally managed to pull off something that I know they’ve been wanting to do for a long time. They’re planning to collect DNA samples from everybody arrested by a federal law enforcement agency, some 140,000 people a year according to government estimates.

Make no mistake, when they say arrested by a federal law enforcement agency that includes everything from the FBI and Secret Service, to the Library of Congress Police. If somebody is arrested by any of these, the feds plan to take a sample of their DNA, even if the charges get dropped. Once they have the sample, it’s going to be extremely difficult to get it out of the system.

Included in the list of people that are going to be required to give up DNA samples is foreigners that are detained, regardless of being charged with anything.

Current practices have DNA collection limited to convicted felons but this move is going to widen the scope of this DNA database considerably.

I wonder how long it will be before they start insisting on DNA samples for more situations until finally the feds have a sample for everybody?

Yeah, I know, it’s all in the name of preventing crimes… least that’s what the article says. Me, I don’t see how collecting DNA samples is going to PREVENT a crime. It MIGHT make it easier to solve the crime but there’s no sense to the claim that collecting DNA samples is going to prevent crime. That’s ridiculous

I have to disagree with your disposition on this article… I think a DNA sample taken from everyone arrested is a good idea. The point being.. if you don’t want your DNA taken as a sample, don’t get arrested! It will make crimes easier to solve and that’s a huge plus!

That sounds an awful lot like the “If you don’t have anything to hide then you have nothing to worry about” justification that I’ve seen used for just about every invasion of privacy that comes down the pipe.

This DNA Database project is just another example of government getting out of control and when that happens, it’s the Joe and Jane Averages of the world that will pay the biggest price.

Personally, I think George Orwell’s “1984″ should be required reading in every school in America. Preferably in every grade with progressively more in depth discussion and analysis of the society in which “Big Brother is Watching YOU”.

It seems like the future for the young people coming up is going to worse
then George Orwell’s “1984″. Everthing from finger prints, spy cameras,
satellite’s and DNA. Is there anything thing they don’t have on us?

Imagine the book Orwell could have written if he had been aware of the technology available today. As it is, he came alarmingly close to the truth.

In a way, I kinda like the idea. I have nothing to hide, and if this is simply the way to ID us citizens, like fingerprints…more power to them. The upside is that when crimes are committed, it’s much easier to convict the criminals. I’m sure once this is pretty standard, no one will think twice about it. It is not unlike other methods of identification….just more precise.

The disturbing part of this is that they’re wanting to collect this information from people who haven’t done anything illegal. This whole “Big Brother is Watching You” thing is getting entirely out of hand and needs to be stopped.

DNA database is really nice but is it possible to collect all the samples of a nation so easily?

I think so. They’re already off to a big start by collecting DNA from people in prison. Add samples from everybody arrested or detained going through customs and it gets bigger. Look for some bright governmental brain fart to decide that we need to collect DNA samples from newborns before they’re allowed to leave the hospital.

It’s gone too far and needs to be stopped.
