Recently I wrote about discoveries of Melamine and a related compound, cyanuric acid, that had been found in US produced baby formula. Now there's a (FINALLY!) growing concern over the issue.
Another recent news story also revealed more details about the formulas in which trace amounds of melamine and / or cyanuric acid have been found.
Michael's formula is one of two best-selling brands that the Food and Drug Administration said tested positive for trace amounts of either the industrial chemical, melamine or a similar one called cyanuric acid.
They are Mead Johnson's Enfamil LIPIL with Iron and Nestle's Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with Iron. Abbott Laboratories, whose brands include Similac, independently reported that it had detected trace levels of melamine in its formula.
The first thing that I have to say about this is that if you've got a child that is being fed one of these products it's a really good idea to give serious thought to switching to something else if it's at all possible to do so.
This story has also shown once again that the FDA isn't there for the protection of the public, it's there for the protection of corporate bottom lines. Why do I say that? Well, for one thing, this article states that they *finally* got around to setting an "safe" level of the chemicals at one part per million.
The problem is that the way the thing reads, they're not really *sure* if that's a safe level, they just set it to shut people up who were screaming about it. Truth is, they don't know one way or another. Personally, I think that Consumers Union has the right idea, all formula containing any of this stuff at all needs to be recalled, period.
