Hairy Cotter?

I was at the store the other day when I overheard something that just didn’t want to make any sense no matter how many times they guys in front of me said it.

The one guy was talking about a problem he was having with his lawnmower.  Some part or other was not staying lined up the way it should.  His buddy kept telling him that he needed to get a new Hairy Cotter Pin for it.

They went back and forth like that for nearly twenty minutes.  All the while I couldn’t help following discreetly just in hopes that I’d figure out what they were saying.  Finally they were in the hardware section and the one guy picks up a hairpin cotter pin off the shelf and said, “here. this will fix your mower good.”

As they headed to the checkout I stood there wondering.  How in the world had I managed to hear “Hariy Cotter” when they said “Hairpin Cotter”?!?

I guess some things we’ll never know.
