Live By The Rules.
I’ve heard that phrase and others like it most of my life. The idea is
that if you obey all of the "rules", then you’re officially a "Good
Person". But there is more to living by the rules than first meets the
Yes, there are rules in this life that we should all live by, the Ten
Commandments, The "laws of Moses". If you read through the first five
books of the Bible, you’ll find that there over 600 laws handed down to
Moses that covered every situation. In order to be blameless before God
you had to keep all of them all the time. The problem is that keeping
all those laws was a full time job. You couldn’t forget to pay attention
to something or take care of some detail.
Why did God give all those laws? Because His standard is one of absolute
perfection. Nothing and no person that is not 100% perfect in every way
is acceptable to God in the least little bit. He gave us the law to show
us that on our own none of us are capable of living to His standard.
Romans 3:20, "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be
justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin."
How can we be acceptable to God if the law won’t do the trick? Faith.
Faith in God’s ability and willingness to give us a way to be
acceptable. Faith in Jesus who DID live a sinless life and was offered
in our place, paying the penalty that the law would require of us.
Galatians 3:11, "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of
God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith."
Why? Because God
Romans 5:8, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we
were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
And wants all of us to escape the penalty of our sins
2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men
count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any
should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
He’s waiting for everyone who will to come to Him. Isn’t it time you
stopped trying to "be good enough" and accept this gift? A good article
that further explores God’s concern for us is "Does
God Care?". It’s well worth the reading.
