Bush Adding New Sanctions to Pressure Sudan
If this wasn’t so infuriating it would just be sad and pathetic.
I mean, it’s not like this situation is new or anything. The atrocities being committed in Sudan have been going on for a long time now and it’s been largely ignored by MOST of the people in positions of power in the US government. Why? I don’t really know, other than the fact that it’s always been socially or politicaly inconvienient for them to press the Sudanese government to put a stop to the things going on in Darfur.
I’ve no idea yet what exactly has sparked this round of showing concern for doing something about this, but I certainly hope that it lasts long enough to get something done.
Oh, by the way, I think that it’s probably going to take a heck of a lot more than “sanctions”. After all, “sanctions” did so much good for over 12 years in Iraq as Saddam and his boys perpetrated horrors on their own people and “sanctions” have done SO much good against Iran’s and it’s mad rush to posess nuclear weapons.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Bush ordered new U.S. economic sanctions Tuesday to pressure Sudan’s government to halt the bloodshed in Darfur that the administration has condemned as genocide.
“I promise this to the people of Darfur: the United States will not avert our eyes from a crisis that challenges the conscience of the world,” the president said.
The sanctions target government-run companies involved in Sudan’s oil industry, and three individuals, including a rebel leader suspected of being involved in the violence in Darfur.
