I just saw the 20/20 special on ABC tonight about Hell and I just have to comment on it.

The first thing right off is that ABC managed to once again present all sorts of views on the subject and only spend a minimum amount of time talking about the Biblical teaching that accepting the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is the only way that anyone can avoid hell.

They then managed to follow that up by spending a lot more time talking about Carlton Pearson and his about face on the topic of hell.  They made absolutely certain to spend more time making it clear that he’s teaching that nobody goes to hell and everybody ends up in heaven.

I can’t just let this go by without saying that regardless of his past, this man is seriously decieved and is now teaching this deception.  ABC pointed out how he went from a 6000 member congregation to only a few hundred as Bible believing Christians refused to sit under this false teaching.  They also said that his congregation is once again growing and I’m not surprized about that at all.  Of course he’s going to be popular with people who don’t want to face the idea that they are responsible for making a choice to avoid hell.

The problem is that regardless of Mr. Pearson’s (or anybody else’s) belief’s or teachings, there is most certainly a hell waiting many after death and a lake of fire that awaits them after the last judgement.

There is a common misconception that God sends people to hell.  This is just as wrong as it can get.  God has never sent anyone to hell.  Instead God gives each and every one of us a choice.  If we choose Jesus we are choosing life.  If we choose to reject Jesus then we are choosing hell and ultimately, the lake of fire.

Another misconception is that hell and the lake of fire was made specifically to torment people and this too is wrong.  Hell was never intended for humans.  Matthew 25:41 says that hell and the lake of fire were prepared for the devil and the fallen angels that followed him, NOT for humans.

2 Peter 3:9 show’s God’s heart on the matter when it says that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  Ezekiel 18:32 and 33:11 support this idea, reaffirming that God doesn’t want the death and destruction of the sinner, but rather that the sinner repents and chooses righteousness and life.

Ultimately however, the choice is ours.

Deuteronomy 30:19, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:”

“Ok,” you ask “So there’s a hell.  How DO I avoid it?”   I’m glad you asked.  The answer is Jesus.

Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

It really is that simple.  After that it’s time to get a Bible and start learning what God’s got to say to you.
