What’s That Crack?
This kind of thing makes me wonder just exactly how much sense some people have.
The Supreme Court is allowing judicial discretion in sentencing. The laws call for
harsher sentences for crack cocaine crimes – which are more common among blacks –
than for those involving cocaine powder, which are more likely to involve whites.
They want to reduce the difference between sentences for crack cocaine and cocaine powder and what do they do? Do they make the tougher sentence be the rule? No. They decide that it’s ok to reduce the crack cocaine sentences to be on par with the powder cocaine sentence. I’m sorry, that just doesn’t make a half a lick of sense no matter how you try to spin it.
And as if that wasn’t enough, they follow it up with THIS:
On the heels of a Supreme Court ruling, a federal panel will vote on retroactively
reducing crack cocaine sentences in a move that could cut prison time for more than
So now that means there’s nearly twenty thousand prisoners let out early.
