Bird flu spreads to Poland, infects cat in Austria

This thing started out ravaging bird populations in China, now it’s all over Asia, Europe. And now to top it off, it’s mutated enough to begin spreading to cats. This is not looking good at all.

Bird flu spreads to Poland, infects cat in AustriaWARSAW (Reuters) – Avian flu extended its spread across Europe as Poland confirmed on Monday that two dead swans had the virulent H5N1 virus and Austria reported a cat at an animal sanctuary tested positive for the virus.

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), meeting in Geneva, said the spread of bird flu was unprecedented and the threat of a human pandemic would not go away.

China said on Sunday the H5N1 virus had killed a man in southern Guangdong province, which borders Hong Kong. There had been no reported outbreaks in birds in the area where he died and experts in Hong Kong urged authorities to find the source.

The man was the 95th person killed by bird flu since late 2003, the WHO said. The virus remains essentially an animal disease which humans contract through close contact with infected birds.

Analysts claim Fear and is the reason for Objections to Dubai port deal

This just proves that among other things, policy analysts aren’t really listening to what people are saying. The objections to the Dubai port deal are many, but they’re not based on isolationism or fear.

They’re based on simple security principal that almost anyone can understand; Dubai is a State owned Saudi company. The Saudi’s have been involved in supporting state sponsored terrorism. Allowing them to have control over ANY of our major ports is a strategically unsound move.

Simply put, NO foriegn interests, regardless of who they are, should control ANY American ports, any more than the mouse should be left guarding the cheese.

Fear, not isolationism, drives ports outcry
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The public outcry over the proposed takeover of cargo operations at six U.S. ports by a company based in Dubai reveals a U.S. electorate beset by anxiety and fatigue, policy analysts said.

“There is a low-level anxiety pervading U.S. society. It’s different from anything we’ve seen in the past,” said Karlyn Bowman who analyzes public opinion trends at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.

Since the September 11 attacks, polls have constantly shown that more than two-thirds of the public expects another attack within a year and that figure has not fallen over time. The public also identifies lack of port security as a major U.S. vulnerability.

Iran threatens full-scale uranium enrichment

Now Iran’s issuing threats to the U.N.? And it’s not exactly rocket science that the U.S. is who they’re really telling where to go. Thing is, the Iranian powers that be are not thinking clearly. If they were, They’d look to their west and think “That could be us in two years.” Make no mistake, Iran keeps up with this ‘get nuclear’ thing they’ve got going on and builds the weapons that everybody KNOWS they’re working on, Our troops will be marching on Tehran.

VIENNA, Austria (AP) – Iran threatened on Sunday to embark on full-scale uranium enrichment if the U.N. nuclear agency presses for action over its atomic program, and a top U.S. diplomat warned the Islamic republic of possible “painful consequences.”

The comments came as the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board prepared to meet Monday to discuss referring Iran to the U.N. Security Council, but delegates said whatever step the council might take would stop far short of sanctions.

John Bolton, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday there was an urgent need to confront Iran’s “clear and unrelenting drive” for nuclear weapons.

Iran “must be made aware that if it continues down the path of international isolation, there will be tangible and painful consequences,” Bolton told the conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Just wait and see. I bet Iran is soon declared to be a threat very similar to Iraq. Thats when the rumor mills will start churning with talk of military action.

AP: Many Defendants’ Cases Kept Secret

Ok, This is just plain not right. It’s one of those constitutional issues and the question I’ve got is WHY is it that this thing hasn’t been challenged in the Supreme Court? For that matter, WHY has it not been given more press? Why have not more questions been asked.

AP: Many Defendants’ Cases Kept Secret (AP)
AP – Despite the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee of public trials, nearly all records are being kept secret for more than 5,000 defendants who completed their journey through the federal courts over the last three years. Instances of such secrecy more than doubled from 2003 to 2005.

The Text of the Sixth Amendment:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.

Most Americans don’t know their rights

Its a sad day when a story like this is true, that most of the 1000 Americans surveyed Did not know the freedoms guaranteed by just the FIRST amendment of the US Constitution.. Never mind even the rest of the first 10 Amendments, also known as the “Bill Of Rights”

I think it’s an even sadder day when a news story about it appears in a news section called “Oddly Enough”. This should not be considered “Odd”, it should be considered a catestrophic failure of many things from our educational system to Patriotism and Moral values. It indicates a level of ignorance and apathy that is mind numbing to consider.

What are your rights? ‘D’oh’ (Reuters) CHICAGO (Reuters) – Most Americans have an easier time naming members of the cartoon Simpson family than listing the five freedoms granted by the nation’s founders, a survey by a museum released on Wednesday said.

Here’s a hint: one of them is not the right to own and raise pets, an error committed by one in five respondents.

Half of 1,000 Americans randomly surveyed by the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum could name at least two of the five members of Fox Television’s Simpson family, the stars of the network’s long-running show.

But just 28 percent of respondents could name more than one of the five freedoms listed in the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment — about the same proportion that could name all five Simpson family members or could recall the three judges on Fox TV’s top-rated “American Idol.”

For the record, here’s the text of the First Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The rights guaranteed are:

  • Freedom of speech (The right to express your opinions and beliefs)
  • Freedom of religion (The right to exercise your own religious beliefs)
  • Freedom of the press (The right of the press to report the truth.  [libel and slander are not protected])
  • Freedom of assembly (The right of people to hold and attend meetings)
  • Freedom to petition for redress of grievances (The right to present your case and settle a matter in court.)

These rights are Constitutionally guaranteed to all Americans and cannot be revoked or infringed by any person or agency.
