I’m Overdue For A Backup Party

A “Backup Party” is what I call an event where I take a day or two, possibly even three, to get all of my important files backed up so that I don’t face the chance of losing them if something catastrophic were to happen.

The problem is that it has been WAY too long since the last time I did this.  A big part of the reason why is that, around here at least, it’s bloody rare that I find blank dual layer DVD’s on sale.  Oh, I could go with the single layer disks and I suppose that I should but the thing is that it would take twice as many of them to hold the data and I really don’t have the money to throw around for that.

Double layer media typically only costs a little more than single layer and has twice the capacity.  That way I could do a much better job of organizing my files.  Besides, there’s another reason for wanting double layer DVd’s, I also want to make some DVD’s of my video productions.  This is partly because I just want them and partly because I want to be able to share certain parts of this collection of videos with family members who are currently unable to see them on youtube because they only access the internet by way of their phones and they aren’t wealthy enough to have the kind of smartphones that are capable of watching youtube videos.

Sealed Door

I remember back when we first looked at this house a few days before we began moving in back in December of 2001.  One of the first things I saw when entering the house for the first place was a set of brass and glass Fireplace doors.  At first my wife and I considered this a good thing because the place we were moving out of had a fireplace and we had used it a lot to save on heating costs.

It didn’t take long however to learn the difference in this one.  The old place had a cast iron wood burning stove fireplace insert.  This made for a very effective fireplace.  on even the coldest of nights it didn’t take long to heat the house to a roasting temperature with only a few logs.

This new fireplace wasn’t so equipped.  There was no insert.  It took us only a few tries to realize that this fireplace had to be primarily intended as a decoration.  It was meant to look good.  In fact, most of the heat from a fire in it ended up going straight up the chimney, making it almost a total waste of time to use it.  After that we closed it up and then sealed it off with a layer of plastic and almost a whole roll of duct tape.

As Usual . . .

Once again Mr. Pushy wasted some time for both of us as he came over and spent yet another hour and a half trying to sell me something that I either don’t need, don’t want, or already have all I need.

In this case he’s doing his level best to convince me that just because I already have led flashlights like the kind he’s selling, that I need more of them.  Somehow, I don’t think so.  In all the time I’ve had it, I have found the one to be quite enough.

It really does the job too.  I remember back in the 1970’s when LED technology started appearing in consumer level stuff that nobody would have imagined that you could have a flashlight that used LED’s.  Let alone one that had 32 really bright white LED’s in it and yet only requires three triple-A batteries to work.
